- Drugs are not just illegal substances such as Cocaine, Cannabis, Ecstasy

- Some reasons why people drink include
- Celebrations
- ‘Coping’ mechanism
- Relieve stress
- Get rid of boredom or have fun
- Because it’s available easily

- 1.2 million violent incidents per annum
- 61% of population think alcohol related violence is getting worse

- Cannabis was reclassified in January 2009. It’s gone back up to Class B meaning
that it is viewed more seriously by the law.
- Cocaine use has increased although purity levels have decreased. Comparatively more affordable…

- The UK has the highest Teenage Pregnancy & STI rate in Western
Europe
- Young People accounted for 50% of all Gonorrhoea & Genital Warts
cases.
- 65% of all positive Chlamydia tests came from young people.
- Between 2002-2006 11,000 U16’s were diagnosed with an STI.

- Warrington 2004 – 31% of 15 year olds reported having sex (633) pupils.

- Average age is 16.9 boys & 17.3 girls.
- Around ?% of young people reported being drunk at 1st sex.
- Young People are most at risk of conceiving between Oct to Dec after
leaving school.

STI’s in the world.

- Talking to their children from a very early age, around love, sex and
contraception.
- Overcoming fear and embarrassment to instigate conversations around sex
and relationships, helps teens to:
- Understand sex
- Handle peer pressure
- Limit risky behaviour

- Through talking it empowers them to make the right choices.

- Do this frequently and repetitively
- Feed off TV storylines, media.
- Do it in a informal way when for example washing the dishes.
- Don’t sit them down for a big talk.
- Ask them what they think about sex and relationships.

- Keep up to date.
- Discuss your values.
- Trying to convince them what is right and wrong may discourage them from
being open.
- Try to keep the discussions light.
